Photographer's Note

I'm not a big nature photographer, but on this close encounter in the Great Smoky Mountains I just couldn't resist.

This picture was shot (safely from inside our car) on our way to Clingmans Dome in the west of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. The bear was digging up something not far from the road. We parked a couple of minutes besides it, it looked up, then continued digging. No idea what it was looking for, probably something to eat.

At an elevation of 6,643 feet (2,025 m), Clingmans Dome is the highest mountain in the Smokies. It straddles the border between Tennessee and North Carolina, the highest point being in the state of Tennessee.
