Photographer's Note

There are four statues on the square in uptown Charlotte, One one each corner. Each statue symbolizes Charlotte's present, past and future. Washington sculptor Raymond Kaskey, created the statues.

As the focal point of the four-cornered composition, the mother and child represent the future. The mother figure emerges from a bower of branches, leaves and flowers of the dogwood, which is the state flower of North Carolina. Stretched between the branches is the hornetís nest to make it more specific to Charlotte.
