Photographer's Note

Sometimes it is the small details ~ a statue in a garden, for example ~ that tell you a lot about the people who live there.

For the most part in Asheville, people of different beliefs manage to live together and get along in some sort of balance, despite their range of perspectives. But it seems to me, eastern faiths and beliefs win out when it comes to decorating houses and gardens. It is not at all unusual to see a statue of Ganesh, Buddha, or Shiva in the gardens and on the front porches of this small mountain town, in addition to prayer flags strung in colorful strands. There is a strong desire for peace and tolerance here.

I saw this small statue in the garden of a home not too far from mine, and the colors came together so beautifully ~ the fresh mulch, the peeling paint, and the remnants of a climbing vine ~ that it was irresistible!
