Photographer's Note

"Well there's one kind of favour I'd ask of you
Just one kind of favour I'd ask of you
See that my grave is kept clean"

GRAVEYARDS AND CEMETRIES are tourist destinations in New Orleans, and rightly so. I confess: I love them. Not just for the graves of the famous and the many, also just for the ambience, the quiet...and the stories they tell. Not only in New Orleans, of course.

In New Orleans there are two cemetries that are regularly visited by tourists: Lafayette and Saint Louis.

SAINT LOUIS CEMETRY No.1 is where Marie Laveau, the famous voodoo queen of New Orleans, is buried. There are two other Saint Louis cemetries that can be visited as well.

LAFAYETTE CEMETRY No. 1 is where this picture was shot. This historic cemetery in the Garden District was founded in 1833 and is still in use today. It was featured in several movies (including "Interview with a Vampire") and series (including the Vampire Diaries spin-off "The Originals").

We visited in with a SAVE OUR CEMETRIES walking tour. You can visit the place on your own, but I do recommend joining a walking tour because that gives you much more information and background.

THIS PICTURE was shot because I liked the light falling on the tombstone, the brick backdrop and of course that cute little angel below too.

The colourful necklace wrapped around the angel statue is typical for New Orleans too. During the late 1800's, inexpensive necklaces made of glass beads began to be tossed into the Mardi Grass crowds. The beads were an instant hit among local residents and visitors alike and now you find them all over the place, also here.

Alternative view (closer) in the workshop.
