Photographer's Note

We had a great walk along the walls of Old San Juan, and we came across this cute little plaza with this magnificent sculpture by Lindsay Daen. Moreover, its story amused us, all the more , my husband being English :
The statues represent the Bishop of San Juan and 3 women bearing torches. They commemorate a religious procession (ROGATIVA) held in the city during the British siege of 1797. According to legend, the candle and torch-lit procession, and the simultaneous ringing of church bells, tricked British lieutenant Abercromby (with his 8000 troops and flotilla of more than 50 vessels) into believing that reinforcements were flooding the city from out on the island. Fearful of being outnumbered, Abercromby and his fleet withdrew from the siege.
