Photographer's Note

9/11 2001: the hardest day of my life ... after being 10 days in NYC I left my hotel (Hotel 17, 17th street) about 7 am and something. I had a transfer to the airport La Guardia. Leaving Manhatten over Brooklyn bridge I had a nice view on the Skyline included the beautiful Twin Towers. But now I wanted to leave for Chicago for abot 6 days. After that I wanted to come back to NYC for some days. But everything came different.
Sitting in the plane about 8.50 I had a windowplace with a view on the skyline of Manhatten. But there was something wrong. The North Tower was burning. What happend in the meanwhile? A man next to me was reading his Tora. I told him what I saw, but he didn't react. As nobody in the plane realized what happend outside in Manhatten I was confused. I didn't stop looking to the towers and than came the moment that the second Tower was lost in the big fire. I didn't understand what happend now because from my sight the plane which was used like a weapon was covered by the building. So I still didn't have any idea. But I saw it was worse and I realized that there were people burning and dieing.
Than the captain of our plane told us that we wouldn't start and that we all have to leave the plane. Just some minutes later we all had to leave from the airport. The next I heard from a guy who phoned with his father was that the first tower collapsed. I didn't beleave to what he said. I really answered "Come on. You know these Towers. That is not possible." But some time later I realized that the Towers were history. Later there were the news " Americ on war". I was there for myself and normaly I like to travel for myself. But these days I was so alone and lost, something like paralized. The first two days I even didn't make any photos. I had to stay in NYC for other 7 or 8 days before I could go back home. After that I didn't travel for 2 years ...

Here you see the dust from the Towers some days later. The picture was taken from the road next the Hudson River.

Taken with my Nikon FM and scanned.
