Photographer's Note

This picture was made exactly 60 years ago on my second trip to New York City and scanned from a colour slide. The picture shows the 24 storeys Herald Square building at the intersection of Broadway and 6th Avenue, built between 1928-1930, and a huge monument with a mechanical clock in front of it. The monument, known as the James Gordon Monument consists of a statue of Munerva, the Goddess of Wisdom, and a bell flanked by two bell ringers. I can see from recent pictures that the building is stillom there but the monument was moved to a different location on the square, and the place is a lot more busy than it was 60 years ago.
