Photographer's Note

There’s a lot of art in NYC subway stations, and sometimes posters appear inside the trains, but it’s rarer to actually find art covering the train interior. For a while now, three different sets of art have been appearing inside select trains on the “E” line.

As part of the Art For Transit program, Australian artist James Gulliver Hancock created this work that displays a mixed up sense of scale in the city. You can find items like ice cream and donuts in between the buildings. On the bottom you can also see pipes that represent the city’s underground.

It’s always fun when one of these artistic trains pulls in, and when I saw a lone rider with his red sneakers sitting in front of the art, I knew I had to take a photo. :-)

I hope everyone is doing well so far in this new year. Take care and stay safe!
