Photographer's Note
‘USA - New York City - Colours in Chinatown’
Another day with an ugly grey sky.
This time I found the colours in Chinatown.
I admit I was very lucky. I wandered around in Chinatown until I found a parade in a side street that was ready to go through the neighbourhood.
It wasn’t a large parade but the participants were very enthusiastic.
After asking around, it turned out that the 10th of October is the National Day of Taiwan.
The Taiwanese Americans celebrated the birth date of the Republic of China. They call that day the Double Tenth Day or the National Day of the Republic of China.
The flags of Taiwan and of the USA were carried in equal numbers. What a coincidence, both flags have red, blue and white as their colour.
When travelling you need some luck occasionally.

Bonjour, cher Paul,
Je remarque que certaines communautés ont gardé leur tradition, et c'est bien ainsi. D'abord, cela crée de l'animation, de la couleur, de l'ambiance, et, si tout se déroule dans la bonne humeur, tant mieux !
Amitiés.

Hello Paul,
A sudden luck is always welcome to a traveller, especially one who is looking for photos. This moment of luck made your day, I am sure. Again five interesting and very colourful photos, this one being the logical main upload because of the spectacular figures in the foreground. You mentioned that Malgo would like the fire escape ladders. I almost thought it was Malgo standing here watching the dancers. I just wondered why she wasn't taking pictures- ;-)
Best regards,
Gert

Looks like something from Chinese New Year time.
Taiwan does have it's special memorial days and thus the patriotic atmosphere. The National Day celebration is about this time in Taiwan, 10th of October. This must relate to that. TFS David

Hallo Paul,

Hello Paul,
You were lucky! What a colourful scene!
You found a great viewpoint, too, with the figures walking towards you.
The portly lady in blue really stands out and adds a little separate scenario. Is she speaking to the revellers, is she one of the revellers or is she blocking their way!
Lovely mixture of photos in the w/s. It is very significant, the importance of the dragon and that these people are proud of their Taiwanese heritage and their American nationality.
My warm regards,
Bev :-)

Hi Paul,
may be they have a parade every day? :)
Beautiful reportage, so full of color.
I remember when I lived in LA, going to different parts of city was like going abroad.
In America many of the immigrants preserve something about their lifestyle what makes the streets so colorful.
They don't bring with them the hatred or holy war but rather nice decorations, parades and original cuisine.
I lived for a while in a Persian part of town and it had fantastic food and grocery stores.
In Europe the situation is slightly different. Even cuisines are adjusted to European tastes.
Great reportage!

Dag Paul,
Goed gedaan, bedankt.
Goedenavond uit Oost-Vlaanderen,
John

Hello Paul,
I am sure that like Europe and Australia, the Chinese food in the US & Canada is far superior to what you get in China, which is very much hit & miss. It took me a while to work out that restaurants in China that were crowded with local Chinese sold decent food at good prices, and empty restaurants were either pricey or bad quality. The masks and Emperor costumes add interest to this festival. The Taiwan flag reminds me that food I had there was less oily and had more salt and less sugar than Jiangsu and the rest of mainland China. Tfs!

Hi Paul
What a fantastic display of vivid colour and festival joy. You captured the atmosphere so well. I like the way you placed the masked people in the centre of the frame so the dominated the photo.
Best wishes

Hallo Paul, a parade took place in New York street at the time of your visit. It was organized by the Tawanese community living in the city. They commemorate their National day. The dancers wear colorful masks, a dragon appears on the left and also on the costumes. Fine colors, good image quality, instructive photo note, regards.

Hello Paul,
Great shots; they are bursting with color. :-) Did you get to see the giant, golden Buddha in the temple that I mentioned? I like the gentleman with the American flag tie in the WS photo. As you already know, here in the US we are American, but with foreign roots, unless we're one of the elusive Native Americans mentioned in your previous post. ;-)
