Photographer's Note

In the Manhattan neighborhood of Chelsea there is a very large apartment complex called London Terrace. It is actually fourteen buildings that were at one time interconnected. It was completed in 1930, and at the time was the largest apartment complex in the world.

London Terrace has approximately 1,670 units, which means it has thousands of residents. It occupies a complete city block between West 23rd Street and West 24th Street, and Ninth and Tenth Avenues.

This complex was built with top amenities for the time: an Olympic size swimming pool, a health club, roof deck, a block-long private inner garden, and more.

When I first saw London Terrace I was amazed by its scale; it seems to go on forever. Here is just one small portion of this interesting complex. In the workshop photo is a broader view. I would have liked to capture the entire block, but from my vantage point I could not get any higher or move any further back.
