Photographer's Note
Symphony No. 1
1200 pixel version for Beta-users
At first sight these boys and girls don’t seems to be the kind of visitors you might expect in the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.
However, they are very interesting in this painting of Richard Pousette-Dart.
Especially the girls are looking seriously at the painting. The boys divide their attention between the painting and the girls.
But: HOW DID THEY MANAGED TO BRING AN UMBTELLA INSIDE THE MUSEUM
Symphony No. 1, The Transcendental
Artist: Richard Pousette-Dart (American, St. Paul, Minnesota 1916–1992 New York)
Date: 1941–42
Medium: Oil on canvas
Dimensions: 228.6 x 304.8 cm
With this work of 1941-42, Pousette-Dart, then twenty-five years old, became the first of the Abstract Expressionists to make a mural-size painting. The monumental, heroic scale is integral to the artist's fundamental goals, expressive of highly personal, mystical beliefs that are as all-encompassing and vast as the work itself seemed at the time. Pousette-Dart worked in several media simultaneously, including painting and photography, and he also wrote a great deal, including poetry, art theory, and a host of other observations. He left more than 200 diaristic notebooks, providing an exceptional snapshot of the world view that shaped his art making. In a notebook probably written in 1940, he wrote, "Art is only significant as it takes us to the whole man and gives us new insights and opens secrets toward the unknown heart of our total mystic awareness." He also wrote, "My definition of religion amounts to art and my definition of art amounts to religion. … Art and religion are the inseparable structure and living adventure of the creative." Bonjour, cher Rob,

Hello Rob,
I have come to really enjoy these candid photographs of people in their everyday life situations. It's a wonderful way of people watching from the comfort of your own home!
You are right, the girls are very intent on the art, whilst the boys are a little more intent on the girls, than the art.
It's a pleasing photograph in more than one way, for we can enjoy the art, too!
Have a good Sunday,
Bev :-)

Hello Rob,
Your photos from museums always amuse and attract me. Here is an interesting painting and an interesting behavior among the visitors. It's probably quite typical that it's the girls/women who care about the art. The presence of the umbrella is almost more mysterious than the meaning of the painting. How on earth could the guards at a museum like that miss it? I was almost thrown out of the Guggenheim for eating an apple at a very safe distance from anything valuable.
Best regards,
Gert

Bonour Rob,
Il y a quelque chose de très intéressant de voir autant de jeunes dans un musée.Ils regardent avec attention et discutent de l'oeuvre offerte.Très belle gestion de la lumière.

I can understand the group of visitors is only an excuse to show us this beautiful abstract painting, very nice photo illustrating the atmosphere in the museum

Hi, Rob, I like this idea to show a Picture In Picture. Well done. I have been trying to read the title (of a band) on the T-shirt, but I can't recognaze this name. Yep, the umbrella looks like a sword in his hand ;) Best! Serghei

Hello Rob,
A fascinating note, especially about the artist Richard Pousette-Dart and his works and thoughts.
But, like you, I am amazed that this group of young people were allowed in this gallery with an umbrella, the perfect weapon people might use to damage art works.
But this is a very fine photograph, particularly as the light levels here do not look good and the image shows very little in the way of noise. The group are nicely gathered around the painting, the girls, as you say, studying it while the boys seem more intent on either talking or simply admiring the girls.
A perfect capture of a brief moment in time with well managed light, good colours and excellent details and sharpness.
Excellent!
Kind Regards,
John.

Hallo Rob,
The group of 4 visitors admiring the bg abstract artwork add graphism to the composition as well as depth and layering. Good sharpness and excellent colour and saturation. Tfs!

Hello Rob, When I opened 1200 pixels version I looked for the umbrella. Indeed, very strange that they didn't notice. And why you think such young people can't be interested in art? But the mobile is always handy. and as to the painting , hm, I prefer older masters. Another pleasant "Scene from the exhibition".
