Photographer's Note

Some people have sunsets over fields or water, and some of us have urban, subway sunsets. :-)

The sun was setting through the scratched and stained subway window, with some housing projects beside it. I found the view to be artistic in its own way.

The reason I was able to capture this "subway" view, is that 40% of the NYC subway system actually runs above ground. There are elevated tracks, grade-level tracks, and even some that are set into embankments or trenches that run just a bit below street level, but are still outdoors. Some really wonderful views can be seen while riding the outdoor subway. There is even a stretch of track that runs across a channel of water to a more isolated section of Queens called the Rockaways. It provides some unique views that don't feel at all like you are in a big city.
