Photographer's Note

A brief break from my Puerto Rico photos...

It's been a harsh and difficult winter in New England, but there are signs that the seasons are finally turning. This shot is from Horn Pond in Woburn, MA. During the first really nice day of the year, but after a long stretch of below freezing temperatures, the pond was covered with people skating, ice fishing, and playing hockey. Here, two ice fisherman enjoy the weather while getting in their last chance at making a catch before the ice vanishes.

The shot is a bit misleading, as the ice is actually quite thick after a long cold winter; the water you see is actually puddles formed by melted snowfall on top of a bed of ice. These two still had to use a pretty heavy duty drill to make their hole, so the ice remains thick enough to support them.
