Photographer's Note

These are two women interpreters, one of whom is pretending to take a nap. According to Rosemary Carroll, the Plantation’s public relations director in 1983, these characters started out with costumed wax dummies in the houses. They then hired costumed guides. After the guides became more experienced, and they went to first-person interpretation, in which the interpreter actually plays the role of a specific person. Plimoth Plantation was the first museum to do this on a grand scale.
