Photographer's Note

View of the Commonwealth Avenue Mall, in Boston's Back Bay. The lights are on during most of December and part of January. The lights are more spectacle than symbol. If they attract people, then the pull is away from the usual holiday destinations. Having time to walk about these surroundings is gift enough. The mall was part of the park system designed by the landscape architect Frederick Law Olmsted. The design is based on models in Europe--in this case, I would imagine, they must have included Versailles and the "Summer Garden" in St. Petersburg.
