Photographer's Note

Boston is the center of American culture and history, and the view of the city from the Prudential Tower, the city's second-tallest building, is a beautiful one, even on overcast days like this. Although the conditions were not ideal for photography, this photograph encompasses the downtown area and many of the major landmarks are visible. The Greater Boston Metropolitan Area has a population of about 5.7 million. Boston itself has a population of about 580,000, actually a low number for a major-U.S. city, but students of the city's many colleges and universities make the population rise some 200,000 during the school year (Greater Boston is home to over 100 colleges).

The area of the city visible on the left side of the image is commonly called the "Back Bay," an area that contains great shopping and fine restaurants. The large expanse of green in the center of the city is the Boston Common, America's oldest city park. The tall green glass skyscraper is the John Hancock Tower, the tallest building in the city at 790 feet (241 meters). Behind the John Hancock Tower is the business district, a cluster of medium- and large-sized office buildings. The large low-rise building with the white roof near the bottom portion of the photograph is the Boston Public Library. The building immediately in front of the Library is the hotel I stayed in during my visit.

It took some adjustments in Photoshop to eliminate the bright haze that was a result of shooting through the window the observation deck.
