Photographer's Note
Goodbye to Winter ?
Boulder Lake
North of Duluth MN.
The title comes from a children's piano piece in the first of the Suzuki books.
When Winter first comes to the North Woods of Minnesota it always strikes me as draping the world in a still peace ... by this time of the year (March) I am going crazy and ready to see the Earth again ... hopefully we are almost their this year .. but one more look at some stillness.
This is one of my favorite shooting locations on the shore of Boulder Lake Minnesota. Boulder Lake is a partially man made lake. In 1919 a dam on Otter Creek merged three existing smaller lakes into Boulder Lake. The lake contains 27 miles of shoreline 98% of which is undeveloped. The area is protected by the Boulder Land Management Area (BLMA) and contains a great variety of wildlife including moose, wolves, eagles, and osprey. The shoreline also hosts the Boulder Lake Environmental Learning Center which hosts a large number of programs throughout the year.

Namaste John,
very well composed shot. Nice view of the last winter shot. Black and white nicely suits the snow covered perspective where you managed the light very well. Nice work indeed. Tfs.
Best wishes.

Hello John,
I really enjoy this for the quiet atmosphere it portrays. It has an uncomplicated composition with lots of empty space that I often like in pictures. Excellent subject for b/w.

I don't think so John. It hard to say that by looking your photo. It looks very impressive winter scene that gives sence to feel cold. Very well framed also.
TFS. GREETINGS. Salih.

Hi John,
I just commented on one of your winter shot on PF. I do like that composition a little better with the stream running through it. Although I also like the open space of this one, It seem less clutter, and it makes me imagin when the winter is gone, the open area will be filled with green pastern and wildflowers. Yet another really well depicted winter scnere, I don't know for sure if this really a black and white conversion or was it really that gray of a weather. Regardless, I like it alot. My complements.

Good Morning John,
Your notes match your photograph very well.
There is a lovely sense of 'wildness' yet unthreatening wildness.
For me, the composition is lovely: strong regard for thirds and with a tapering triangle of vegetation, which leads the eye into the distance.
The focus is just right, too sharp and the mellowness, with its atmosphere, would have been lost.
Have a good day,
Bev :-)
