Photographer's Note

This is the stela of the king seen in the forefront of yesterday's upload relating to structure C1 at La Venta. The light is better here in the Parque La Venta in VSA. The central figure is of the king or governor in a most elaborate headdress carrying a baton of command or staff of office. He is surrounded by 6 flying, possibly spiritual beings with different headdresses affording him protection, while legitimating his term of office. The sculpture dates from circa 700 - 400 BCE.
