Photographer's Note

23rd October is a national holiday in Hungary. We commemorate the revolution of 1956 that broke out in Budapest against the communist regime of Hungary and spread to the whole country. Although the revolution was crushed on 11th November by the Soviet troops and was followed by cruel reprisals that led to a big amount of emigration, it brough a long-term easement in the political life of Hungary.
This photo presents the 1956 memorial statue in Vác, at the side of the prison. It was erected for the 50th aniversary of the revolution. In the prison of Vác several state prisoners were detained. On 27th October with the help of the citizens they managed to get free from the prison during the revolution.
