New site December 2014

A bike trip on second day of January, a wonderful soft winter day, no clouds, only a blue sky.
The Leopold canal was for my a place out of my childhood.
A lot time for fishing and swimming during the summer time as children, the water was then nice clear, a lovely time but very long time ago!

I hope that all visitors can enjoy of the picture.

History of the canal:
The digging of the canal ran from 1843 to 1854 but would never completely follow the original plan. The hand-dug Leopold Vaart does not result in the Ghent-Terneuzen but suddenly stopped somewhere in the territory of Boekhoute. As a result of a new agreement between Belgium and the Netherlands was in 1920 through the newly dug Isabella Channel with the Braakman and so connected with the Scheldt, dammed up the Braakman in 1952 and was largely reclaimed. The drainage function was maintained.
In addition to the drainage function would be there at that time also give an immediate military function in the case of the Netherlands would again come to a war, which is why the channel roughly follows the boundary Belgium-Netherlands. However, it never came to that. The only time that the channel has played a military function was at the end of WW II. During the month of October 1944 fought several Canadian and British divisions in Operation Switchback around the canal heavy fighting with the Germans, who insisted on keeping control of the Scheldt estuary.
