Photographer's Note

The Historic Centre (known in Portuguese as The Pelourinho) is a historic neighborhood located in the western zone of Salvador, Bahia. It was the city's center during the Portuguese Colonial Period, and was named for the whipping post (Pelourinho means Pillory) in its central plaza where African slaves received punishment for various infractions, as well as for disciplinary purposes.
The Historic Centre of Salvador da Bahia, frequently called the Pelourinho, is extremely rich in historical monuments dating from the 17th through the 19th centuries. Salvador was the first colonial capital of Brazil and the city is one of the oldest in the New World (founded in 1549 by Portuguese settlers). It was also the first slave market on the continent, with slaves arriving to work on the sugar plantations.
Nicknamed "Pelô" by residents, this area is in the older part of the upper city, or Cidade Alta, of Salvador. It ecompasses several blocks around the triangular Largo, and it is the location for music, dining and nightlife. In the 1990s, a major restoration effort resulted in making the area a highly desirable tourist attraction.
Pelourinho has a place on the national historic register and was named a world cultural center by UNESCO in 1985. Easily walkable, Pelo has something to see along every street, including churches, cafes, restaurants, shops and the pastel-hued buildings. Police patrol the area to ensure safety.

I really like that view of Salvador and being there for the first time, back in 2008, was enjoyable if there weren't too many beggars and vendors all around me!
But the colorful façades and the wonderful church in the bg compensate that for sure!
Great picture, with excellent photo quality, that's for sure!

Bahia looks like such a colorful and vibrant place. I remember becoming interested in this part of Brazil after learning about the great singer Caetano Veloso, who is from Bahia. :-) I like all of the activity, and the charming, colorful facades. The old church is also very nice. I'm sure there were so many things to photograph in Bahia.

A very interesting note and a very fine photograph from this part of Brazil.

The buildings are delightful - the distant old building contrasting well with the colourful buildings on the right and the hundreds of colourfully dressed people in this piazza adding to the appeal.

Gorgeous soft light and colours, fine composition and exquisite details and sharpness.

La présence des gens anime la scène. La longueur de la rue donne de la profondeur à la composition. La prise de vue permet de voir les détails des immeubles et de l'église. Le ciel nuageux donne un bon contraste aux couleurs de l'image. Bonne soirée.

bella, anzi bellissima.
Mi piace l'animazione della piazza, la nettezza del disegno, i colori, la luminosità.
Un quadro animato, quasi un presepe per essere in tema con il periodo.
L'unico difetto, ma forse è solo una mia impressione si ha la sensazione che la chiesa penda leggermente sulla destra e l'occhio inevitabilmente finisce per cadere su di essa.

in questo caso credo che il cielo nuvoloso era buona fortuna, offre atmosfera, equilibrio, interesse e luce filtrata. Hai fatto un ottimo lavoro sulla tua foto ed hai ottenuto magnifica chiarezza in grande profondita'. Le tonalita' grigie del ambiente fanno spiccare gli altri colori, non solo sulle facciate, ma anche in tanti dettagli dispersi in tutta la piazza. On dirait qu'il y a eu une petite touche de HDR dans la post production. Pa contre elle est juste assez légère pour être très agréable à l'oeil. Elle fait ressortir tous les moindres détails.

This is a vibrant scene both for colours and people. Your view encapsulates this perfectly. There seems to be almost a festival atmosphere with the relaxed mood and bright colours.
I like how your viewpoint captures the size of the cobbled plaza, the colourful balconied houses and terminates in the focal, symmetrical church.
Your HDR has softened the light but has not removed the colourful vitality of this tourists haven.

The weather may bot have cooperated but this is still a superb daily life scene of the vibrant Salvador street. The al fresco diners seem to be enjoying their cafe latte and meals. The distinctive facades of the alternating colors of yellow, green orange etc at right enliven the scene. Tfs!

The square looks impressive with the fine church and the pastel coloured houses. The off-centre composition works well. Interesting is the torso-less dress standing in the middle.
