Photographer's Note
The sun's rays were almost horizontal when I shot this scene at the Fuel Wharf of my local marina. I'd been doing some work on my boat, well I call it work, my wife reckons I just go down to the boat to make sure the beers in the fridge are cold. It was one of those glorious winter late afternoons, a game fishing boat had come in to refuel, the mid week sailors had just finished their race, and the stories of who had won and who should have given way at the rounding mark were coming thick and fast, not to mention the odd beer that was being consumed.
Fifteen minutes after I shot this it was dark and cold, it was a magic moment.

Hi Peter,
What a fantastic shot and unique light !! Winter sun .... yes, you are right. This light is so different from the summer which is too hard ! In winter the light is soft, placid.
I fully agree with you; it's a magic moment ! Love it !

If you were down my way today Peter you wouldn't have been worrying about the beer - you would having been making sure that there was whiskey or rum on tap!
Great evening colour and your usually precise composition.

Hello Peter,
These winter sun care for a specially light and long shadows.
All boats in the marina are very calm and wait on the night.
I like the panorama view. Very well done, TFS.

Hello Peter,
The title is suitable. This gilded light is a happiness. The environment of impassioned sea is correctly translated. I like framing like the realization. Congratulations.
Have a nice day

Hello Peter!
I love winter sun and the colors it brings to things as we can so nicely see in this picture of yours!
Pov and composition are excellent!
Sharpness, exposure, depth of field and colors are real good! The boats, their masts, people with colorful clothes and caught quite naturally in their affairs, the texture on the water surface and the reflections there too, everything's perfectly matched to create a very pleasant and beautiful image!
TFS - congratulations!

Hi Peter,
what a view on these fascinating boats (defying the financial crisis)in the golden light! You have captured the boats from an excellent POV. But it is the cozy atmosphere that makes this impression very attractive. TFS!

Hi Peter,
That is some nice light, for sure. Sorry you have to go into winter, though, we are just getting hot hot hot here. Did I mention humidity? Well, you sweat from breathing in St. Louis during July & August...
Anyway, when I get back to Sydney, you are going to have to take me out in your boat!
Looks like you got the sharpness you were looking for, too. Do you have a setting in your D90 that allows you to fine tune the focus? There's one in the D300, but the process is daunting - I think I will send mine in for tuning if I start seeing problems.
So, beautiful scene, great job! Have a super weekend,
Reed

Hi Peter. I pays to have the camera handy, probably somewhere close to the fridge is the most handy spot. (just in case you get sick all that work of course ;-) Nice catch, great timing for the light and colours. Love the “busy” detail too.
Have a good weekend, Paul.

I am not a sailing person. I like an engine on the back of the boat, may be a bit bigger than the one in the foreground. The big boat in the center of the pic could do the trick!!!
Anyway, at the moment what I do need is a plane to bring me back to Australia from Israel where I have been working for 35 days.
It is a very nice shot where the plight plays an important role. Well done.

Hello Peter,
I like the tight framing on these boats and the presence of the people in the foreground, who contribute much to the atmosphere. The light is wonderful casting a soft golden glaze across everything. A moment to cherish.

Hi Peter,
It sure does looks like a wonderful winter day. I find that falls and winter season is the best time for photo shoot, especially on a clear day. In the summer and spring, there's always some haze even on a clear day.
I love the reflected light in the water, like strings of silver very mesmerizing. I do like the casual atmorphere here with the men getting the boat ready and the two on the back just sipping beers and chatting. I would have like the see the face of the man in the red shirt, but that is really much you can do. The light is really fantastic here....and off course the beers has to be stock and kept cold. Nothing worst than warm beer even on a cold day, That is and important task :) Cheers.

Hello Peter,
The sun-soaked scene draws one in, just as your personal note does. What an inviting shot, as only low angle rays of the sun seem to be able to produce. The red jacket of one of the sailors adds a useful highlight color. Thanks for sharing this busy, well-composed shot.
Warm regards.

Nice one, Pete! Marinas are one of my favourite places, too - and I'm always late home when I visit them! You've managed a nice warm colour to this shot to emphasize the lateness of the day, and plenty to interest the eye, too.
Best wishes,
Jeff

Hi Pete,
Yes - the tight framing adds a lot to this relaxed composition. Everyone looks so relaxed all the way along the Fuel Wharf. You have captured the last light very nicely. Good Work - Sir.

Hi Pete,
You did catch the light perfectly for this one as all the lovely pleasure crafts enjoy a slight yellow glow as the make a superb reflection in the gently rippling silver blue sea.
Your winters don't seem hard to take if this is any indication. In my neck of the woods you won't see any lingering and all the beer is consumed indoors.

Hi Paul,
Beautiful warm tones of sunset in what is maybe not such a warm day. THe boats and their paraphernalia make interesting patterns, that together with the "curbed compo" rendered by the boats encircling the shiny piece of water on the lower right, make the image very attractive. The relaxed attitude of the men in sight enhances a pleasant, relaxing mood.

José

Hello Peter! Beautiful light indeed, it seems so clear and the light not disturbed by humidity. Yes these moments, you have not a lot of time to think about shutter speeds and ISO settings but just go for it, and bang, something beautiful comes out like you show it. I like the atmosphere in this one too, people enjoying their free time with a sip of beer and discussing the latest news. Now tell us, were you really working on the boat? Best regards, Barbara.

Hello Peter,
A nice close-up shot of the activities around these yachts, with beautiful lighting which only makes Melbournians envious, since we don't get this often in winter. This shot certainly conveys the ambiance very well.

Hello Peter,
You indeed have a very different winter from ours! No boats in the water in our winter and most years the water would be iced. :-) This is a lovely view, with such a beautiful late evening light and atmosphere. Also a pleasant composition in spite of the normal "busy" appearance of a marina. The people in the boats enjoying the last minutes of sun add a nice overall impression. TFS!
Best regards,
Lasse

Paul, this is a fine shot makes me think of the saying that goes something like "I spent 70% of my life on boats, the rest of it was just wasted". The details and color of your frame are wonderful and the sunset lighting make it warm and inviting, great stuff.

Hi Peter,
a real warm could be felt in the scene with the light on the boat and the guys in red.
you managed to tidy up the ropes and posts and sail very well. i would have encountered difficulty in adjusting and making the shot uncluttered.

Magic moment indeed :D
Great evening light, it's always a delight when it's so low & soft, coloring everything warm & lenghtening the shadows. A marina scene is always interesting when there's people about, but with this light you had a very good idea to bring out the camera in addition to the beer :D
What kind of boat do you have btw?

Hi Phil, A wonderful warm glow emitates from this image. The low light reflecting off the water and the polished hulls, works well. The photo is well cropped and we can see a lot of details, usually not seen when too far away. TFS. Murray.
PS i 've not been to this marina, but you have encouraged a trip this summer.

Hi Peter.
I like this kind of light capturing subjects especially in a marina with so many boats. Amazing light with stunning colors captured in close framing. The human interest is so well included in this Fuel Wharf. I'm sure you found yourself the cold beer to enjoy the view.

Hello Peter,
I notice the warm attractive light blessing this fine afternoon scene!
The life in the marina is well captured, I guess the guys are busy clearing the boats after the day on the sea...
A pleasant composition with fine details and a strong eye-catcher in the boat to the left, but it still is the light that makes the image stand out!

The reflections are maddeningly beautiful and everything is balanced perfectly in terms of light, colour and composition. Noice one!
