Photographer's Note

Mystras was one of the highlights during our trip in Greece.

Situated on Mt. Taygetos, near ancient Sparta, it served as the capital of a Byzantine Despotate in the 14th and 15th centuries. The site remained inhabited throughout the Ottoman period until it was abandoned in the 1830s.

It's a fascinating place to wander around the old ruins on the mountainside, descending from the medieval castle at the top, passing several abandoned Byzantine churches, including some with amazing frescoes. There's also an active monastery and a small museum.

The friendly village inn on the small square of present day Mystras provides excellent budget accomadtion and fine meals.
