Photographer's Note

I have planned to spend two days in Lviv to be able to enjoy a performance at Lviv Opera in the evening. With its elegance Lviv Opera rivals the best opera houses in the world. Sadly the tour operator told us that it may be not easy to get tickets because it was an opening night after few months break and also it was Ukrainian Independence Day with many guests arriving to celebrate it. The performance was supposed to start at 18:00 and we had a free time until 18:00 so naively we decided to ask at the ticket counter if there are any tickets left. There were so many people arriving in elegant gowns and walking the red carpet already, the chances for that to happen appeared slim. The lady at the counter told us that there are two tickets left indeed! We bought them of course. But our tour operator was supposed to take us at 18:00 to the hotel outside of town where we had plans for dinner. I called the tour guide, he said he will be at the entrance to opera in 5 minutes anyway to meet the group. At the very same moment we have met our Polish friends who we know from England and who took part in a parallel tour but with a different operator. They invited us for a drink in the cafe in front of the opera house. You can see the umbrellas of the cafe in the far right corner of this photo, they are shaped like ballerinas. And so waiting for the guide we have ordered drinks. I have spotted the guide at the entrance. It was already 17:45. I left my camera and drinks with my wife and friends and rushed to meet the guide. It was quite critical to meet him because I didn’t even know what hotel we are staying in and all our clothes were on the bus. Just when I met him the rain started to fall. And suddenly it poured! People in elegant dresses run to hide, I didn’t know where to run to the guide or back to my wife... With the guide I tried to hide under the opera entrance but the crowds didn’t allow us to hide properly so I got completely wet. At least I got from him the hotel name and the guide promised to pick us up after the performance to take us straight to another night part of sightseeing. My wife arrived soaked as well with the wet camera and camera bag. It was 5 minutes to performance. Our friends decided to ask as well if there are any tickets left but there were not. And so in shorts and T-shirt, completely wet with my wife who was fortunately as always elegantly dressed we went to the red carpet alongside the elegant guests. I run to the bathroom like Mr. Bean trying to use the drier but it didn’t help at all. The people were either so classy or self-centred that nobody even blinked seeing me soaked and inappropriately dressed. We have missed the dinner but it was worth it. We have enjoyed the premiere performance of Don Pasquale by Donizetti. You can read HERE about it.

I know the picture may seem too simple for many of you, but under the circumstanced described I am happy to have any photo from this place at all. It was taken earlier the same day.
