Photographer's Note

Another photograph from beautiful Perthshire, believed by many to be the loveliest and prettiest county in all of Scotland. This one was taken just a hundred yards or so from "Queen's View" after I had walked down a little from the viewpoint which was becoming increasingly thronged with tourists.

Looking due west, we are looking along the length of Loch Tummel and the mountain you can see some 12 miles or so in the distance is Schiehallion, a lovely mountain to look at, a fine mountain to climb and one which affords lovely views from its top. And, as I explained before, it was on this mountain in 1774 that Nevil Maskelyne and his colleagues carried out the "Schiehallion Experiment" which was the very first real experiment to calculate the mean density of the Earth and hence its mass.
