Photographer's Note

In spite of the disastrous earthquake that hit Nepal a little over a week ago I will post one or two more photos from 1972, long before the destruction of a large part of Nepal's cultural heritage.

This is not a spectacular photo but maybe it indicates the integration of the culture of the temples with ordinary peoples' lives in the Kathmandu Valley. In those days fruits and vegetables were sold from the steps outside temples, and the temples were also used as meeting-points for the locals.

For me, who in 1972 was just discovering the idea of street-photography, the opportunity to combine people and culture was like a gift from above. Indirectly it also helped me to save expensive film :-).

This photo of two elderly ladies having a chat in the warmth of the sun outside a temple is from somewhere in Kathmandu. I will show two more photos of similar kinds as workshops. As usual they were all scanned from Kodachrome slides.

Here is a larger version.
