Photographer's Note

It is home to some fifty-five thousand inhabitants of the metropolitan city of Bari. The historic center is enriched by numerous churches, including the Apulian Romanesque cathedral concept, and valuable examples of Renaissance architecture such as the Sylos-Vulpano and Sylos-Calò palaces. It is home to the first national gallery in Puglia and the largest diocese museum in southern Italy.
Porta Baresana, also called the Door of the Navy, as it looks to the former part of Bitonto, Holy Spirit, was supposedly built in the 16th century. However a century later it was rebuilt as a result of a damage. The front façade retains a Renaissance style with access consisting of a full arch and flanked by skirts that end in a lintel. On this was added a copy of a polychrome predella, a painting representing the city's protective saints. The taller façade features a Savoy coat of arms replacing the city coat of arms added in 1551 for the ransom of the city by the feudal lord. The upper part of the front facade is made up of the space of the clock, added in the twentieth century. On the watch compartment stands a statue of the Immaculate, which hides the bell of the watch. The backside facade features a ring nut with side panels, similar to the exterior facade, but with the taller base sockets. On the architrave, which features the coat of arms of the city, stands the eardrum in which the second dial of the watch is located in the middle.
