Photographer's Note

JiuZhaiGou valley is situated in the central south region of Jiuzhaigou county of the Aba Tibetan and Qiang Autonomous Prefecture in Northern Sichuan Province, made famous for its beautiful lakes and crystal clear water. This Y shape valley is about 40km long, its elevation goes from 2000 to 3000 meters and so named after the nine Tibetan villages in the surrounding areas.

This picturesque valley enjoys pleasant climate and beautiful colours all the year round even in winter. The high concentration of calcium carbonate, forms different shades of blue, green and turquoise-coloured lakes according to their depths, residues and dazzle with color in the sunshine. The water is so crystal clear that the bottom is always visible despite depths of several dozen meters and at times if you see tree trunks under water it is difficult to distinguish the part that is submerged and the one that is outside.

The water, which remains at the same level all year despite the drought in winter or rainfall in summer, is the soul of JZG with its twelve waterfalls, ten tributaries, many springs, lakes and surrounding high peak mountains. They say in China that you must visit JZG at least four times in a lifetime, one in each season. I am sure those who have witnessed this place would agree with me, that JZG must be one of the most enchanting places.

This shot was taken early in the morning at a spot known as The Mirror Lake.
