Photographer's Note

Still dealing with the southeast corner of the Pyramid of Kukulkan, this is the stucco treatment that appears on the southern face. Here two levels are involved; both the second (refer to yesterday's upload), and the third. It is believed that the skulls of decapitated warriors would have been placed in these niches. I understand that Mayapán was a highly militaristic society, and that a death cult may have flourished here.
