Photographer's Note

The gnomon, used to measure time by position of its shadow, occupies its own raised platform on level 1, to the right side of the Acropolis. This view looks to the west. The serpents, witnessed earlier on Ball Court #1, constitute a Maya symbol of power. They refer to the scepter of rulers who are deemed lords of the maize, i.e. those who possess knowledge of the agricultural cycle, who know when to sow and when to reap. Such timing can be determined only by studying the sky, examining the position of the sun on the horizon at sunrise and sunset, predicting eclipses of the sun and moon so as to demonstrate that one is indeed, "Lord".
