A pair of young lovers among the Mayan ruins at Palenque. The ruins of Palenque (Pronounced Pa-len-kayh), called Pakal by the local Mayans provide an impressive archeological site, with several pyramids that are at least 1500 years old. It used to be a notable religious center of the Mayans. Sourrounded by lush tropical forest, it is located approximately 5 miles from the town of Palenque in the state of Chiapas. You can take a bus from Villahermosa (which has a large airport) in the state of Tabasco. A first class bus (ADO) takes about 2 hours from Villahermosa.
