Photographer's Note

There are probably few places on the world where one can encounter a more striking contrast in human society than on a few miles long way from San Diego, USA to Tijuana, Mexico. Yet, each side of the border somehow reflects itself on the other side. People on both sides are irresistibly fascinated by values from other side. Many Americans, stressed by their 'success', strive after relaxing 'chaos' life style of the other side, and most of Mexicans strive for the same 'success' of the other side. In between, there is an invisible, yet high wall. A good dinner in one of Tijuana's countless fish restaurants, enjoying laud, vivid, live music and relaxed atmosphere is something one should not neglect.

Scanned by Nikon CoolScan ED-IV. The slide was awe full, more than one stop too dark, picture was taken hand held in very 'miserable' light conditions and thus fairly unsharp with strong color cast. Cropped. Picture was split by two masks: table reflections and the rest. Each one was corrected for lightness, color hue, and contrast. Reflections were very noisy due to deep underexposure, therefore I applied Gaussian blur, 2 pix radius twice and Unsharp mask, level 35, 6 pix radius to them. The rest was sharpened using level 50, 2 pix radius (both at 4.000 pix picture width). Resampled to 700 pix width and sharpened again, reflections level 40, 3 pix radius and the rest level 75, 1 pix radius. JPEG level 30 (Corel PhotoPaint notation).
