Photographer's Note

13 August 2006, Queens Road, St. John's, Newfoundland

A police officer of the Royal Newfoundland Constabulary patrols a cordoned off perimeter as fire fighters put out a house fire on Queens Road in downtown St. John's.

In spite of the "Fire Line" tape and the presence of two police cars and three fire engines, members of the public living adjacent to the smoking house still crossed the line to take a short cut home, or even to have a closer look at what was going on.

No one appeared to be in the house at the time of the blaze, nor was there any visible damage to the external walls of the house. By Friday that week the remaining tape had all been torn down and the doors of the vacant house boarded up, life went on as usual in St. John's.
