Photographer's Note

A lot can be said on this district of Montreal which is called "Plateau Mont Royal". It's located right in the center of the island of Montreal, it is the most popular district because it's well located, near downtown, the subway is nearby, its stores, restaurants, boutiques are very dynamic, and also, of course, near Mont Royal. A lot of these old houses are very popular with the younger population, or intellectuals, people working in arts, or anyone who doesnt like the uniformity of suburbs. You have to be very lucky or have a good revenue to be able to have a house or even rent a flat on Plateau Mont Royal - the rents are astronomic - my son just rented a 3½ room flat with his girlfriend - and he doesn't want to tell me how much he pays. You will find a lot of large apartments 4 or 5 bedrooms where students from the various universities or colleges will live as co-tenants.
This picture shows one of the quieter streets near Mont-Royal Avenue (where you will find most of the stores and restaurants). The colorful houses shows a little how this district can look like and the type of people who would rent such flats. You will also see a lot of bicycles as often the people living there will prefer this more ecologic way of transport (or maybe with the cost of rent they just can't afford to own a car).
