Photographer's Note

This is a set of three pictures of Wendy Broad, the defending Canadian Bantamweight women’s champion. She is ranked #1 in North America and 5th in the world.

Women’s boxing began in 1991, and the first world championship event was held in 2000. Canada won medals in the Bantamweight (Wendy won bronze) and Featherweight divisions and the team came in second behind Russia. Since then Wendy has gone on to win:

- Ringside National Golden Gloves Champion (2003), European Silver Medallist (2002), Canadian Champion (2002), Pan-American Gold (2001).

She is currently preparing to fight in the Canadian Nationals.

Her biggest fight, however, is to get the sport accepted as an Olympic event. Despite meeting all the international requirements to qualify as an Olympic event the drive for the 2004 games has hit a wall.

These pics are from one of her sparring sessions earlier last month. That man she is in the ring with is the top ranked Canadian Middle-weight. This was in Atlas Gym in Toronto, the same gym where current World Heavyweight Champion Lennox Lewis learned the trade way back in the days when he was a Canadian!

Post-pro: in each the pic was converted to b/w from the original colour; the grain is due to my using 400 digital ISO (but I thought the grain would be appropriate); curves were used to increase contrast. In the largest pic to the right a wide oval selection was made and feathered, the selection was copied to a new layer and the background darkened with curves… the goal was to draw the eyes in.

Camera specs (clockwise from big pic on right):
