Photographer's Note

I've been to Las Vegas several times, mostly because I enjoy photographing all the neon signs at night and at blue hour.

But you don't have to travel to Vegas to see Neon lights, as most major cities have some, whether it be alot or at least a little.

These shots were taken along Granville Street, which is known as our Night life district, full of bars, night clubs, dance clubs, Theatres, restaurants...its where all the 20-30 year olds hang out on a Friday and Saturday night.

Those days are long gone for me, even though i'm only 44. I'm sure if I showed up inside this "Studio" - which is a dance club - I'd stick out like a broken bone. I'd be Grandpa haha.

Anyways, here are 3 Neon shots I captured in Vancouver just for fun.

Hello Craig,
This is a neon sign that just has to be a kind of local hero. I'm sure it's a classic that could be considered a cultural heritage. Those in the WS also provide great flashes of light and colours, but this has an elegance that is hard to beat.

Hi Craig,3 shots from the nightlife of your city, different and very bright, the blue of the court in the WS is truly a unique sight. Good memories, I think that even now everything is closed like my bar, we hope to get out of this nightmare soon, even if the data are swinging, one day positive and one day negative. Hello Craig, this sign is so distinctive with that enormous ‘S’ that seems to go beyond the edge of the roof!
Great idea to make this the centrepiece of this shot.
The workshop pictures are also good, but this one really stands out.

The presence of the persons is animating the scene. The point of view is showing the details of the neon sign. The surrounding light has a good effect on the colors. Have a nice day.

Hi "Grandpa" Craig,

Ah, ha, no, I guess you're still just a "Daddy" but I understand that you might feel like a grandpa if you were to enter one of these places. But I suppose there's no chance of you (or anyone else) doing that for quite some time now since Coronavirus raised its ugly head.

A fabulous and very bold and colourful photograph, very well seen and very well taken too with perfect technical quality and exquisite details and sharpness.

And now I've just looked at your two workshop images - you really are a great "night time" photographer! I'd love to know what settings you use for these images - i.e. what ISO, shutter speeds, etc. and whether or not you use a tripod all the time.

P.S. Yes, what with "lockdown" I seem to have a little more time on my hands and so, like the Prodigal Son, have sheepishly returned to TE! But you must now be under a lot more stress than usual if your workplace has now been turned into a Covid-19 centre. Here we hear how the virus is spreading rapidly from New York state across the U.S. - is it also rampant in western Canada?

Anyway, Craig, you take care - and take extra special care of your son and that lovely wife of yours too!

Craig, that neon sign signals a night bar in Vancouver trendy quarter. It s eye catching, its size bigger than the entrance is used to attract the customers. The shape of the s draws attention. Excellent light management. Fine colors, good sharpness, interesting photo note, regards.

Yeah, I think I remember that place, but I only saw it in daytime, so it was probably closed and I am too old for it also, I guess. Excellent photo of the neon lights and that big S in particular. Very pleasant warm tones and great sharpness.

Hello dear Craig, I like this composition with the old fashioned neon very much. Also, the red roof looks very attractive. Nice Workshop pictures. In fact, I do not know what the neons we have in Warsaw. We have a special museum of the old neons, it is fun to see them there.
I stay home all the time, following your advice. The overall costs of all this will be gigantic.

A striking night capture with eye-glueing colour of the neon-bathed facade with clear detail on the lower part giving you a much more satisfying composition. You have captured the vibrant atmosphere nicely. Well done.

Ha! Ha! Craig, I loved the thought of Grandpa Craig!
You'll have a long way to go before that is a reality, though I understand what you mean about sticking out - we say - like a sore finger!

I really like how how the canopy seems to be glowing red and diffusing light onto the tree, whilst above the neon sign is almost boasting its presence, against the darkness.

No-one seems to be aware of you and your camera.
Did you get any funny looks?
And, I must ask, did you set up your tripod in the road?
