Photographer's Note
I'm posting this photo in response to danielswalsh's query in this forum. I think this is the Hollow Tree he was referring to. This photo was taken in June 1996, and the tree had rotted to the point that the center was hollow, and a big chunk of the side had disappeared. But at that time, one could go near and even inside the tree. Now, in March 2008, I understand the tree has been fenced off. The Stanley Park board has voted to cut down the tree as it may pose a hazard to the public. It's probably in a lot worse condition today.
On another note, I have seen forums (in TE and other sites) regarding privacy and photographing people in public. Interstingly, when I held the camera up to my eye, the man also held out his hand to indicate that he (and his family?) did not want to be photographed. So I hastily pressed the shutter. It also happened to be the last frame ("E") on my roll of film, so I decided to move along while rewinding and reloading, hoping that I had captured a clear shot. (Ah yes, the good old days of film)
Unfortunately, the resulting photo has motion blur and lack of focus. If the picture were clear, I probably would not have posted it, out of respect for his wishes. Even though I was actually photographing the tree, they just happened to be standing there. But because of the blur, the people are no longer recognizable. So here's the photo for your enjoyment, or otherwise. :)

Hi Lamberto;
I responded to the forum a few hours ago stating that you were correct after a fellow Vancouverite (and aquaintance) Alvin Brown (CORMAC) confirmed what you said...
It's just coincidental that a very short time later you happened to post the shot.
This gives us a good idea of the size of the tree- no doubt. Interesting how someone would hold their hand up to you asking that you not take their photo in the tree. Did they think they were some sort of celebrity or something (not an uncommon site in Vancouver).
Shame the shot's a bit blurry- but thanks for taking the time to post it!
All the best,
- Dan
