Photographer's Note

Land of Plenty

Graham is a young artist living in the East Hastings area of Vancouver - the most deprived socio-economic area in Canada and the subject of much debate with the coming Olympics - get ready for gentrification and the dispersal of many hundreds of damaged and distressed people - who knows where. .....

I don't know what the answers are or where these people will go but Graham's artwork shows how many of these people earn a daily crust now - not all of the placards speak of needs - with no phones or permanent addresses these placards also act as message boards at times.

Talking to Graham was really interesting because this young man has some compassion for and relationship with many of the people he has 'begged' placards from - so each placard has at least one very human story behind it .....for instance the one in shadow by his folded arms carries on it's message on the back and was written with a cigarette butt - a guy looking for a missing woman and her child.

The 'wall' attracted a great amount of interest - I even spotted two signs I'd seen on the streets in Vancouver in April....
