Photographer's Note

Do you like Haunted houses? Here's one in Vancouver if you're interested. This is the Dominion Building.

Its easily one of my favorite buildings in Vancouver, and the fact that its a Flat Iron build, well that makes it that much better.

The sad part is the building is located in the Downtown East Side of Vancouver, which is the poorest location in all of Canada. So its not the place you really want to go walking alone at night.

I wouldn't say its the HEART of the downtown east side, its more of the entry point, so it's not too bad. It gets worse as you head West (right) of this photo down the street. Many drug addicts, lots of petty crime, prostitutes, needles on the sidewalks, that sort of thing. And its easily the worst area in all of Canada, its actually a fact, not an opinion.

As for the building, its been haunted for a long long time. The short story, is that during its construction in the early 1900's, a worker fell to his death at the top of a spiral staircase. To this day his ghost has been seen on the staircase itself.

The most famous story is of a recent construction worker doing repairs, saw the ghost, and left the building in such a state of disbelief of shock or whatever, that he left all of his tools and equipment and never came back.

I've been in this building a few times, but never had such awesome luck! I have gone in here to photograph the same staircase, and i'm still waiting for the ghost to appear :)

Sorry about the lighting, its not the best, the colours are a bit off because of it, but you get the idea.

Thanks for looking

A couple people have mentioned how surprised they were to hear about Vancouver having this bad area.
Ike mentioned he read somewhere that Vancouver is often on the top of the list of the World's most liveable cities...and that is true. We often do rank at the top of that list year after year.
However, with every major city across the world, there are bad sections, bad areas to avoid. Vancouver is no different in that regard.

The DTES (downtown eastside) has been a black mark on the city, and no matter which government is in place, decade after decade, it never improves.

And yes, this is a very 'pretty' area of the DTES, but as I've said, this is the entry point, it gets MUCH worse as you head down the next five or ten intersections.

As for the ghost story, this is where you start the Vancouver Ghost Tour. Many people have reported seeing the ghost in the building, with strange activity. I do believe it :) But I do like that sort of thing :) It would make for an excellent TE photo!

If you want to know what I mean by how tragic this area of Vancouver is, please read the critique written by BOA. He was recently in Vancouver and walked these streets i'm talking about. quite interesting to read.

Also, I've gotten myself in trouble walking these streets with a camera in my hand, I was attacked and kicked, then followed for several blocks until I outran them.
