Photographer's Note

The sculpture now stands on the east side of the University in downtown St. Boniface. The work of Marcien LeMay, it was unveiled as part of Manitoba's Centennial Celebration in 1970. At this new location it was rededicated in 1995, 110 years after Riel's death. It portrays a man in bondage, filled with anguish, who sacrificed himself for his principles and country. He was a great leader of the Métis people, both in Manitoba and Saskatchewan.
