Photographer's Note

This picture shows a bulk carrier ship exiting from lock #3 of the Welland Canal on route from an Ontario port to Lake Erie. I put another picture into the Workshop which shows this ship entering the lock. There are eight locks on the 44 km long canal to overcome the 99 m level difference between these two lakes, this lock raises ships about 14 m. It is interesting to see how small is the gap between the ship an the walls of the lock. The locks are 24.4 m wide and can accommodate 225.m long ships. The ship pictured here, the Algoma Transport, is 223 m long a 23 m wide. The picture were taken from a observation platform beside the lock.
