Photographer's Note

The Tulip Festival began in Ottawa on May 6th, and on Tuesday we travelled to Ottawa to view the display of thousands of tulips. At Dow Lake Comissioners Park area alone they have 300,000 tulip bulbs planted. The Tulip Festival began in 1945 when Princess Juliana of the Netherlands donated 100,000 tulips bulbs to Ottawa for the safe haven provided to the royal family of Holland during the war years. They became a symbol of the international friendship established between the two countries. During the time the royal family resided in Canada, Princess Margriet was born at the Ottawa Civic Hospital. The first actual Canadian Tulip Festival was held in 1953 and has become an annual event which attracts many visitors to the Ottawa region in May.
