Photographer's Note

Whale watching off Pleasant Bay in Cap Briton is a real treat. They take you out 2 1/2 miles off shore and you are guaranteed a sighting or two of these wonderful creatures. The trip takes a little less than 2 hours and is well worth the effort.

Here is another capture of a Pilot Whale staring right at me while I was taking his or her picture. They are very curious and playful animals and very difficult to catch in the frame.

Picture this; you're in a Zodiac bounced around by the waves and there are whales all around you. The problem is that they are mostly submerged and you have to guess where they will pop up next. Which means that you're scanning a 360 degree vector in a bouncy boat with you're camera on manual settings making sure that exposure and shutter speed are just right. And that's what we call fun..

Truthfully getting any decent shot of these wonderful mammals is 90% pure luck and 10% the whale's pleasure to show up for you. So be ready to shoot in continuous mode and have a back-up solution for your memory card because it will fill up real fast.

I've added a picture in WS showing the other side of this picture. Have a great day.
