Getting Water, a photo from Al Mahwit, West

Photographer's Note

Hababa is a small village along the route north of Sana. It is known for its beautiful cistern and the beautiful architecture around it. Many people come and go all day long in order to get water from it.

Its quite a relaxing place and very nice to sit and just watch the world go by. Sitting here you would think that you are in biblical times.

comme tu as pu le constater le temps n'etait pas au rendez vous pour notre meeting, part contre sur ta photo du jour la lumiere est splendide et l'architecture tres originale, j'aime bien , le fait que tu es inclus les gamins venant chercher de l'eau.

Daniel,
You are right, the architecture is beautiful. Your composition is great here showing the people collecting water on one side of the frame and the great architecture on the other. The reflection provides a nice balance and depth to the shot. The lighting and colors are great with excelelnt sharpness and detail. The deep blue sky is great and provides a nice backdrop for the shot.

It is very interesting place, I mean, Yemen is interesting. Unusual photo of this cistern and people coming for water. It reminds me cistern in india, although of course the buildings and the cloths are different. But atmosphere is similar. beautiful picture

definitivamente una muy buena imagen. Noto muy bien la diferencia entre el rudio que dices sobre las mías y ls tuyas.
Parece que usaste un filtro polarizador para la imagen, ¿es cierto, o es que el cielo es así de azul en Yemen?
Sí que parecen tiempos bíblicos, como una biblia ilustrada o un libro de religión del colegio. Las personas a la derecha, clásico en tus fotos, dan una muy buena idea del uso del agua, y de lo intenso del sol para esos lugares, ya que están bien protegidos con la ropa.
Ye leí el blog de El Comercio que escribiste de Yemen. Muy buena y concisa narración.
Pasando a lo de mis fotos. Sí he notado que nunca salen con tan buena resolución como las tuyas. ¿Se deberá a la cámara?
Te cuénto que hago yo con mis fotos para ver si hay algo que se puede mejorar en el proceso.
Tomo las fotos en RAW. Dejo que la cámara elija el tipo de white balance. No dejo que la cámara procese las fotos para reducir el ruido (esto, según leí en internet, no mejora las fotos, y sólo lo hace en las fotos que se exponen por más de 1 segundo). Los lentes que uso no son los top-of-the-line de Minolta (ahora de Sony), quizás por eso no salen tan bien. Luego proceso las fotos en Photoshop 10 CS3. Abro el file RAW y automáticamente se abre una ventana para modificar las fotos RAW. Allí se puede cambiar todo otra vez de la foto, como el white balance, el contraste, aumentar o disminuir la exposición, etc. De allí ya en PS le cambio el perfir de Adobe 1998 al working profile que uso en mi compu. La reduzco de tamaño a 800 pixels y le aplico USM. pocas veces 20/50/0 (porque se nota mucho el uso de USM en los bordes), usualmente 15/35/0 o por ahí.
¿Hay algo que me falte? ¿Algún otro software que no tenga? ¿Algún otro truco?
Te agradezco toda la ayuda que me puedas dar.

The Yemen Gallery is growing at quite a pace these days. And I'm sure it will only grow faster as more people discover this country. This is one of the only places that I wasn't able to cover on my trip that I really wanted to see. I really like this photo Daniel. I love the girl gathering the water, her yellow bucket, and the ripples in the calm water.

Fantastic lighting on the buildings. I think this is one of your best shots from Yemen.

What a marvelous architecture, Daniel ! Ah c'est vrai, tu parles aussi le français - ces maisons disposées en amphithéatre en face d'une pièce d'eau qui les reflète, la lumière très forte, les couleurs splendides et les enfants sur la droite : une super photo, je vais l'ajouter à mes 2è favoris et j'aimerais beaucoup me promener un jour là bas !

where have I been? I just looked into your gallery and was totally surprised with the outstanding shots that you posted recently. WOW! Difficult to decide were to start with.
The building with the amphitheater like shape and the girl getting water at the right is fantastic but what makes it really good is the light that you got here and this ultra polarized sky. Man, I love that!

Salut Daniel, como estas ? C'est curieux je ne vois pas dans tes dernières photos de lieu tel que syrie liban et jordanie, vous l'avez fait ce voyage ?
Celle ci est sublime, il me semble que je l'ai déjà vu cet endroit dans la galerie de Tan, ta version est géniale, parfaitement polarisée, nette à souhait et le POV est élégant, j'apprécie énormément.
Pas encore là le baby, encore un bon mois de sommeil pour le futur papa ;-) A bientot sur la capitale !

This is an excellent photo of Hababa and the village cistern. You have captured well the detail and texture of the buildings surrounding the cistern also. The lighting is great too.

I agree it is a relaxing village and truly stunning. I was there just a few weeks ago and loved it!
