The artwork on the left is 1234567890 by Brigitte Kowanz. It is made of mirrors in mirrors, neons and steel. The place is Borusan Contemporary.

Borusan Contemporary is a museum and a multi-platform program of exhibitions, events, educational initiatives, new commissions and site specific installations rooted in Borusan contemporary art collection. These activities are defined by their specific focus on media arts broadly defined, ie artists who work with time, light, technology, video, software and beyond. Most of the program takes place at the museum at Perili Köşk Istanbul, and co-exists with the offices of Borusan Holding, in essence creating a unique museum in an office paradigm. The entire building including the galleries, office space, café, BC Shop and outdoor terraces with breathtaking views of the Bosphorus are open to the public on the weekends.

Since the early 1980s, Viennese artist Brigitte Kowanz has consistently worked with light and reflection as the core medium of her internationally renowned practice of wall pieces, installations and architectural interventions that transcend form via a rich conceptual and metaphorical practice. Kowanz was born in Vienna in 1957, where she studied at Universität für angewandte Kunst (University of Applied Arts). In 2009, she won the Großer Österreichischer Staatspreis, Austria’s most prestigious price for fine arts. She has shown her work extensively internationally including recent large scale shows at Museum Ritter, Waldenbuch, Galerie im Taxispalais, Innsbruck and MUMOK Museum moderner Kunst Stiftung Ludwig in Wien. Since 1997 she has taught arts throughout Vienna. Currently she has a Professorship in transmedia art at the University of Applied Arts.

Hello Deniz,

I was immediately attracted to this from the thumbnails and am pleased to say that I am more impressed by the full size version!
It is a fine expression of art, iridescent lights, reflections, shapes, subtle hues and all very strongly composed. It is almost as if the approaching rings are trying to communicate with the figure!

Galleries didn't get a look-in when we were in Istanbul Deniz, there just wasn't time in 6 days as the city just has so much to do and see. Pity! This is a marvelous shot and contributes to the idea that I have to visit Turkey again one day. Superb colour is the initial attraction here but then the details continue to fascinate the eyes. The hanging grids of light give the shot a fantastic feeling for the 3D nature of the space. Neatly cropped on the square, the rectangles and circles are contrasted by the figure. Smashing work. well, this type of ART is certainly not my style, I guess I'm just not sophisticated enough :)
Some of this contempary art is just plain weird and downright strange - and somehow its called ART?

my feelings aside, it does make for cool photos!
its great that you added in the man on the right for added effect, and that purple is burning my retinas, i should go see my Eye Doctor now! haha

cool shot, makes a strong impact visually.

Tosca and I will be arriving in Istanbul May 9th.
We will probably stay in Istanbul for 4 days? We want to go on the Hot Air Balloon ride in the Valley, and also see those strange looking flats - the baths...sorry i forget the name of the top of my head.

So we may be in Turker for about a total of 8 or 9 days...then we're off to Greece, then Venice.

YUM! this is an absolute delight to the eyes!
oh the intriguing stories that could be written about the silhouette of the solitary man, collar up on his jacket, leaving the scene of this futuristic fantasy of lights & geometry. intriguing, mysterious, graphic ... would pair well (at least color scheme-wise) with yesterday's post of the colorful ice bar in brussels :)

I saw it already on bb photo from the same day. It seemed to me I saw you there :) I do not know if this is Art but the blue colour here is really cool, nice shot with the dark silhouette, fine reflections and lights. I like it whatever it is. And what a funny title. And making permutations so many possibilities to name other works. Square formats matches beautifully the square matrices.

Now that is what I call eye catching! The colors here are very striking, while the design of the neon rings burst out of the shot in a very cool and strange way. Even the purple waffle lights hanging around are quite surreal. I love that you composed this with the silhouetted man in it too, that adds a lot to the scene. I did see a conversation here on TE recently which said how people add so much to museum shots, and this is a fine example of that. He fills the space well, and puts a sort of context to the place for me.

Without him, I think this image would confuse me, but with him, I can place myself here in the museum admiring the artwork. (Not sure admiring is the word, but certainly staring at them, hahaha).

Hi Deniz, Super graphic art with awesome reflection. The violet tones and the silhouette have nice effects on the white rings and the squares light panels. Great capture with a calm mood and I like the way you named this image, it is very scientific. Thank for sharing

it´s quite futuristic and for sure very eye-catching thanks to its color scheme and all the neon lights.
Almost like some kind of transition to another dimension.The silhouette is also crucial to make the scene so meaningful and expressive.

Sometimes I am at a loss to differentiate between modern art and technology...in many cases they seem to have bleded seamlessly to create a different type of inspiration...justaposition of graphic art with photography is also an example. Creativity they say...and lines cannot be drawn as to where this can go.
This is a very interesting scene...with all the strong graphic effect created by the light and man adding to the scene well

The advice is ages-old -- to make a better foto, simplify the composition, reduce the number of subjects, distill the scene to its essence. You demonstrate the virtues of this approach here in every way! The center of attention is clearly the artwork (with a POV chosen, presumably, to not display a reflection of the photographer!), the human figure reduced to silhouette, in the ghostly setting of dim light accented by the repeating rectangular panels. But the simplicity of the lesson also belies the difficulty of the challenge -- this would be a much less compelling image without the three panels in the upper left, which complete a nice compositional triangle with the circular reflections on the floor and the rectangular panels in the upper right.

I think I understand that you are an engineer -- but you must also have seriously studied art at some point. Or perhaps you were simply born with an innate understanding? If so, lucky you! For the rest of us, we must study great examples like this and try to internalize the lessons.

Merhaba young Deniz

Ahh so this is an artwork!? I thought it was some weird new age hairdresser on first glance. In any event, I like it a lot. The purple and gold tones make me a little dizzy and the silhouette of the bystander adds a very necessary and compelling element of interest. I like the effect of the reflections and am very impressed with the lack of noise and the sharpness, despite the high ISO. Nice work.
