Photographer's Note

One of the most iconic Roman-ruin images in the world, this structure epitomizes Ephesus at its peak. It was the third-largest library of the ancient world (behind the collections in Alexandria and Pergamon), with some 12,000 volumes. The library was built between A.D. 110 and 135. The ruined library was restored to its current appearance in the 1970s.
