Karagöz (a Turkish compound noun where kara means black and göz means eye) is a traditional Turkish character which roots back to the Ottoman Empire. He is always coupled with his mate Hacivat.

Animators (or the puppet masters) of Karagöz plays are called Hayali, meaning both 'imaginary' and 'image creator'. Hayalis impersonate every single character in the play by mimicking sounds, talking in different dialects, chanting or singing songs of the character in focus.

There is an extinct type of Karagöz play, known as 'Toramanlı Karagöz' or 'Zekerli Karagöz', in which Karagöz has a phallus, Hacivat is ashamed, and female characters are naked. This type of play usually included slang and swearwords, and Karagoz was often depicted performing graphic sexual acts with women and young boys.

In Turkey, the most famous character of those tales, now made only for entertainment, was Karagōz who is believed to be based on a historical person. During the 19th century this character passed to Greece, where he was adapted as Karagiozis.
