Photographer's Note

Ticketed entrance to Topkapı Palace is through the Gate of Salutation, the entrance to the Second Courtyard. This gate is also known as the Middle Gate (Orta Kapı). Its date of construction is uncertain; the architecture of its towers appears to be of Byzantine influence. An inscription at the door dates this gate to at least 1542. Passage through the gate was tightly controlled and all visitors had to dismount, since only the sultan was allowed to enter the gate on horseback. With these electronic turnstiles, even the sultan could not enter on horseback these days.

We are looking at the interior of the gate, from the Second Courtyard through the gate to the First Courtyard.
