Photographer's Note

We were visiting the Suleiman Mosque,Northern of the Sulthanamet neighborhood; it is one of the many jewel of that exceptional city. It was built on the order of sultan Suleiman I° and was constructed by the great Ottoman architect Sinan. The construction work began in 1550 and the mosque was finished in 1557. The Mosque is on the top of one of the highest hill, with a fantastic view at 360° on the European and Asian parts of the city.
From one of the wall that rounded the complex i saw more than 10 meters down that men that were playing probably the national “sport” of the Turkey: the Backgammon.
It is the oldest known recorded game in history. Traditionally, it was believed to have originated in ancient Egypt, Sumeria, or Mesopotamia in the Persian empire (present-day Iran, Iraq, and Syria). However, more recent conclusive evidence indicates that the game originated on the eastern borders of Iran, near Afghanistan.

In that site there is a good report about the oldest Backgammon:
The world oldest Backgammon
