Photographer's Note

Waiting, waiting, waiting in the dark shadows of the street in Taksim.....whilst a few feet away the good natured demonstration whirls and twirls in song and dance.....these guys not much older than the students protesting alongside them. Istanbul seems to delight in demonstrations - this was the fourth one I have witnessed in my two visits - it seems like a popular past-time. A shot like this in the UK could get me arrested these days under the new anti-terrorism laws, identifying a policeman can be considered a crime in the wrong circumstances.....civil liberties and photography has become more and more of a debate. On the other hand images and films of the actions of police against demonstrators in the UK have brought about a wider debate about police tactics and the heavy handed use of force. The right to public demonstration and the protection of the police (and their good behaviour) is a functional right of any democracy. When a demonstration turns sour and violent though we must recognise they have another role to play and one in which they as human beings put their lives and well being on the line....we expect them to get it right and act within the law - our images then are vital evidence!
